- Vineyards in the Beira Interior region arrived in the 12th century, in the Malcata, Estrela, Marofa, and Gardunha mountain ranges, surrounded by the Douro and Tagus rivers and where the Côa and Zêzere rivers originate. Located between 400 and 750 meters above sea level, this is the highest wine region in Portugal. Its wines are forged in a climate of extremes – with the intense heat of summer and the harsh cold of winter – and in granitic and schist soils, which give them a vibrant minerality and acidity.
- The CVR Beira Interior (Regional Wine Commission of Beira Interior) was founded in 1999 and is the entity responsible for the regulation and certification of the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Beira Interior. The traditional red grape varieties are Rufete , Tinta-Roriz , Touriga-Nacional , Jaen and Trincadeira. Among the white varieties, Síria ( Roupeiro ) is the most planted, with Arinto and Fonte-Cal also being prominent.
